Join me this Thursday evening, May 29 at Brooklyn Museum for See Make Sip.
I will be hosting a pop up workshop on the first floor of the museum. I'll be teaching finger knitting inspired by a work in the African Art collection. Learn this simple knitting skill with me to make bracelets and necklaces and see how it was used to make a Likishi dance costume.

This past weekend I taught a workshop at 92Y for building settings for unusually shaped gemstones. This was such a fun class!
The first session we worked carving in wax, approaching the shapes of stones as problem solving and building a setting to hold them. The next session the following week we cleaned our castings in the metal and set our stones. Here are a few of the student pieces from the workshop.
This year I'm mentoring two high school students through a really wonderful program based in Dumbo, Brooklyn called Art Ready. I'm working with them for 12 weeks so they can get some experience from a working professional artist, and hopefully inspire them to follow their passion for a career in art and design.
This week I brought them on a tour through NYC's Jewelry District to go behind the scenes with some of the vendors I work closely with and to source materials from the projects I'm helping them make. They'll be designing a collection, creating a select piece from it, photographing it, pricing their pieces, writing about them and displaying them at their closing exhibition at Smackmellon.
We sent this group of jewelry out yesterday for a photo shoot with Roxy Japan! Dreaming of waves, sunshine and summer!!
I just finished teaching a super fun class at Brooklyn Brainery. Here are some pictures of beaded earrings the students made.
We arrived in Tucson, AZ just past midnight on Thursday evening. It was such a relief feeling a cool breeze when we walked outside as opposed to the single digit weather we've been having in NYC.
Ben, my boyfriend who's traveling with me wasn't prepared for how large these shows are and how many very different types of people they attract.
There are main shows in convention centers and hotels that each specialize in different things. Then there are outdoor shows in tents on the side of the road literally all over the city.
Day 1 we hit up the tents along the road which are my favorite. Most of the vendors dig the stones themselves and have a genuine love for gemstones and minerals. We saw amazing fossilized rocks, dinosaur fossils, and more minerals than I could count.
My favorite finds of the day (pictured below) were these gorgeous aragonite minerals from Morocco. Rough fluorite which grow in the most magnificent shape. Big chunks of lemon calcite that have the greatest color. And the tiniest baby geodes I ever saw, they were so cute!
Today we will hit up the big show at the convention center. So stay tuned....
