Open Level Wax Carving Fundamentals: 6 Week In-Person Class

This 6 week, open level wax carving class will introduce you to all the basic techniques and tools of this wonderful jewelry making technique. We will be making two projects in this class over the 6 weeks - a ring and a pendant. This class is open level and is geared towards both beginner and intermediate level students - projects and demos will be tailored for individual student level.

This wax carving class teaches jewelry design using various wax carving and forming techniques. Students will design and carve a ring in hard wax, learning to use files, burs, and carving tools for subtractive sculpting. For our second project, students will carve a pendant and learn the additive technique to build the wax up and joining with hot tools. Intermediate level students will learn to carve beyond the basic bezel setting, add prongs and work on tube settings. Wax carvings will be sent out to a professional casting house and we will learn to finish the metal in this class including casting clean up, polishing and patina.

Wax carving is an ancient technique dating back to the Egyptians where you carve a small, detailed sculpture and cast it into metal using the lost wax casting technique. Wax carving and casting is a wonderful technique for creating your own handmade jewelry and is a great technique to practice at home that requires very few tools.

This course is open to beginners and intermediate levels and teaches introductory jewelry techniques. Tools and wax materials are included, and a tool list is provided if you'd like to purchase your own tools. The material cost for metal casting is not included and there are a few different options for casting - brass, bronze, sterling silver, and different karats of gold (although not recommended for beginners projects). Castings in base metals like brass and bronze are usually around $15, depending on the weight.

From Wax to WOW!

Emilie offers a class that is relaxing, engaging and informative. She modeled techniques and guided us as we learned to create structures to properly support any ring. Then, she set us free to make a ring in our own aesthetic. The class is lively and I learned a lot from watching my classmates. This class is on par with a class offered in an accredited school of jewelry design. I have gotten a firm understanding of the principles she modeled. She further supported each lesson with videos to both reinforce the lesson and to explain the cost of doing business. I really hope Emilie will offer classes in the future to allow us to advance.
