Working in metal is a whole different ballgame than wax, so if you need some tips to make the process easier, my How to Clean a Casting Jewelry Class is perfect for you!
You certainly don't need a flex shaft to clean a casting, in the class I show how to use both hand tools and a flex shaft. You'll learn how to saw off the spru, finish your metal and polish your piece.
My Biggest Tips for Cleaning & Polishing Metal Castings:
If you're using the same files in both wax and metal, I highly recommend getting a file cleaner. It's especially important to brush off the metal shavings before you use the file on wax again as they can make scratches you don't want. This is also something you can grab at a hardware store.
If you're working in precious metals, like silver, gold or platinum, be sure to save your sprus and even your metal dust. Fold the edges in on a piece of paper and work with it on your lap while you cut and file your metal to catch the dust. Store in a plastic bag or a small container and then refine.
Make sure you don't use your double ended wax file on metal as it's too aggressive!
